UNDP University Innovation Programme AI UniPod Launches At UNILAG
The UNDP University Innovation Programme AI UniPod has officially launched at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), marking a major step in advancing youth-led technology innovation and entrepreneurship in Nigeria. The rollout of this flagship Artificial Intelligence hub signals a strategic push to position Nigerian universities at the forefront of Africa’s digital transformation and innovation ecosystem.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Federal Government of Nigeria, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and UNILAG. It forms part of the broader UNDP Africa Timbuktoo Initiative, which aims to unlock Africa’s innovation potential by connecting talent, capital, and technology across the continent. With the introduction of the AI UniPod, stakeholders believe Nigeria is taking a decisive step toward building a knowledge-driven economy powered by emerging technologies.
Speaking at the launch, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia, representing Vice President Kashim Shettima, described the programme as a turning point for university-led innovation in Nigeria. He emphasized that the UNDP University Innovation Programme AI UniPod is not merely a research hub but a practical platform for enterprise development and national growth. According to him, Artificial Intelligence is rapidly shaping the future, and Nigeria must actively engage with these advancements to remain competitive globally.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, also highlighted the importance of the initiative, calling it a “transformative milestone” for both the university and the country. She noted that the AI UniPod would significantly enhance ongoing research, training, and startup incubation efforts within the institution. According to her, the hub will provide students and researchers with the tools and resources needed to harness Artificial Intelligence for real-world impact.
The UNDP University Innovation Programme AI UniPod is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and market opportunities. The launch event attracted a wide range of stakeholders, including government officials, university administrators, industry leaders, and students. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was represented by the Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake. Other notable attendees included the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, and the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, represented by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad.
Nigeria is among the first countries to implement the UniPod model at scale, with eight universities selected in the initial phase. Each institution will focus on a specific sector, including Artificial Intelligence, AgriTech, MiningTech, GreenTech, TourismTech, TradeTech, and the Creative Economy. Participating universities include UNILAG, Ahmadu Bello University, Benue State University, Lagos State University, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, University of Maiduguri, Nasarawa State University, and the University of Uyo.
In addition to the UniPod launch, the event also marked the inauguration of the National Innovation System Initiative. This complementary platform is designed to integrate talent, research, and funding into a cohesive framework capable of driving sustainable development. By aligning these elements, stakeholders aim to create a robust innovation ecosystem that supports long-term economic growth and improved quality of life.
As the first AI UniPod becomes operational at UNILAG, attention is now shifting toward expanding the programme nationwide.
