Senate Urges Nigerian Military to Strengthen Response to Borno Insurgency in Nigeria

The Nigerian Senate has urged the country’s armed forces to intensify operations against the Borno insurgency in Nigeria following a deadly attack on a military base in Kukawa Local Government Area. Lawmakers emphasized the need for stronger intelligence gathering, surveillance, and operational capabilities to prevent future attacks and secure the North-East.

Senator Tahir Monguno raised the motion after the March 9, 2026 assault, in which suspected insurgents approached the army formation from multiple directions, engaging troops in a fierce gun battle. The attack tragically resulted in the death of Lieutenant Colonel Umar Faroug and several other soldiers. Colonel Faroug was noted for his role in helping displaced residents return to Kukawa after the area had been overrun in earlier insurgent attacks.

During the Borno insurgency in Nigeria attack, insurgents also set military vehicles ablaze and looted weapons, highlighting a renewed wave of assaults despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations under Operation HADIN KAI. The Senate commended the bravery of the Nigerian Armed Forces while stressing that sustained military operations, improved logistics, and enhanced intelligence capabilities are critical to consolidate progress made against insurgents.

The North-East, particularly Borno State, has long been a hotspot for extremist activity, including attacks by groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province. These groups continue to threaten communities, security forces, and infrastructure, creating widespread displacement and humanitarian crises.

Kukawa has been a focal point in the fight against insurgency, and while Nigerian troops have reclaimed territories, sporadic attacks underline the ongoing security challenges. Lawmakers believe that a combination of sustained military operations, improved intelligence, and community cooperation is necessary to suppress the insurgency effectively.

In a show of respect for the fallen soldiers, the Senate observed a minute of silence during the session. The lawmakers’ resolution underscores the strategic importance of reinforcing Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East to ensure long-term peace and stability.
